Opinion FromOpinionExplanation
Imam MalikOnly the word 'Allahu Akbar' is allowed.
Imam Shafi'iThe words 'Allahu Akbar' or 'Allahu al-Akbar' are both permitted.
Imam Abu HanifaTakbeer is permitted with all words conveying the same meaning.
The jurists disagreed on whether its the word, or the meaning behind those words, that are required. · Malikis and shafi'ees argued on the basis of the hadeeth, "The key to prayer is purification, its sanctity starts with al-takbeer, and it is discharged with salutation." Dalil al Khitaab, there is an implied meaning in the text. Abu Hanifa rejected this.
