Imam Abu HanifaThreeImam Abu Hanifa, when restricting the number to three, based his decision on the report that Ibn Shin upheld the report from Umm cAtiyya about bathing to be thrice, twice with lotus and the third time with camphor water. In addition, the odd number in law, in his view, is applied to mean three only.
Imam ShafiIt should not be less than three but there is no maximum determined. Narration of Umm Atiyya implies the fixing of a number. Imam Shafi held the opinion that it should not be less than three times as that is the minimum odd number expressed in the tradition of Umm Atiyya. He maintained that what is above this is permissible because of the words of the Prophet (Gods peace and blessings be upon him), "If you deem it proper ".
Imam AhmadShouldn't exceed Seven. Imam Ahmad upheld the maximum odd number expressed in some versions of the tradition, and this is in the words of the Prophet (Gods peace and blessings be upon him) "or seven "
Imam MalikThey considered an odd number to be desirable, but did not fix a limit for thisThe analogy, on the other hand, drawn for the dead from the living with reference to purification implies that there is no fixed number in this just as there is no fixed number in the purification of a living person. Hence to reconcile between Narration of Umm Atiyya and analogy, it is considered desirable.
