Opinion FromOpinionExplanation
Imam MalikIt is not permitted to commence fasting or to cease fasting on the testimony of less than two trustworthy men.Preferred the tradition of Ab Al Rahaman on the basis of analogy (i.e. holding it similar to testimony in other claims)
Imam ShafiFasting is to commence on the testimony of one man about sighting, but fasting is not to be stopped with the testimony of less than two men.Reconciled the tradition of Ibn Abbas and Ribi ibn Kharish through their apparent meanings.
According to Ibn Rushd, It appears that Imam Shafi made a distinction between the moon of fasting and the moon of cessation of fasting on the basis of the suspicion that is associated with people in the sighting of the moon of cessation of fasting, but is not present in the case of the moon of fasting.
Imam Abu HanifaIf the sky is overcast the testimony of one person is accepted, but if it is clear in a large city only the testimony of a large number of persons is acceptable.
