Agreement:In general, scholars agreed that intention is required for worship in as established in verse 98:5 and hadith of Umar Bin Khatab. But they disagreed whether Intention is needed for Wudu.

Scholars distinguish between types of actions:

  1. Pure ‘Ibaadah: Salaah, Hajj, etc (requires intention)
  2. Rational ‘Ibaadah: Washing dirt (requires no intention)

The scholars do not differ on this – what they differ on is whether wudu’ is in category #1, or category #2 since it bears resemblance to both.
